VIOLAFEST OVERVIEW

Join us for the first year of ViolaFest Los Angeles on February 24, 2007 hosted by Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica and the Southern California Viola Society. This fun and educational event geared for students is a day devoted to the viola.

Highlights of the day include a recital and master class by UCLA and Colburn Conservatory Professor Paul Coletti, classes to sharpen skills, and chances to hear and perform works for multiple violas. Come to play new music, gain more skills, build camaraderie, meet new friends, and be inspired in a unique and supportive community of violists and friends.
Student registration is open to students in fourth through twelfth grade who play the viola or violin. If you are a violinist wishing to try the viola for the day there will be special classes for you. A $15 student registration includes a free ViolaFest t-shirt, and participation in all events. Auditor registration is open to any adult educator, teacher, musician, or parent who wishes to participate as an observer.
Welcome Violinists
The viola is not a large violin! Try the viola for a day and learn the finer points of playing the viola through specially designed classes for violinists. A limited number of violas will be available free of charge (through Metzler Violin Shop) at the ViolaFest.

VIOLAFEST HIGHLIGHTS

Special Guest Recital (Program)

He will be presenting a recital with special guests, Minor L Wetzel (Los Angeles Philharmonic - viola), James Lent (piano), Caitlin Kelley (violin), Adam Waddell (violin), Kendra James (viola), and Yina Tong (cello).
Master Class
Three advanced students will be selected to participate in a public master class given by Paul Coletti. If you wish to be considered to play in the master class you must include a recent tape, CD, or DVD with your registration or under separate cover by February 9. Please mark your recording with your name, age, and contents of the recording.

Viola Ensembles

Two world premiers of multiple viola works will be performed at ViolaFest! Acclaimed composer Maria Newman and multifaceted composer Bevan Manson are writing works especially for the students. All ViolaFest participants will have a chance to rehearse and perform two separate works for multiple violas. One piece will be with other violists with your ability level and the other piece will be with the entire ViolaFest participants. Once you register, you will receive music in the mail or through your school music teacher. This music must be prepared prior to ViolaFest to participate in the performance.

Special Topics Classes
